NiYA Gigs: A New Frontier for Youth Empowerment in Nigeria

NiYA Gigs Event

On December 9, 2025, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu officially launched NiYA Gigs, a groundbreaking initiative designed to expand opportunities for young Nigerians in the digital economy. The launch, part of the broader NiYA ecosystem led by the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, took place in Abuja under the theme “One Youth, Two Skills.” This national platform is set to transform the way Nigerian youth work, earn, and compete both locally and globally. What is NiYA Gigs?

NiYA Gigs is a digital work and freelancing platform that connects Nigerian youth with real paid opportunities in today’s dynamic gig economy. Whether you are a graphic designer, writer, developer, marketer, or artisan, the platform offers a range of online and offline jobs that match your skills with client needs. The goal is simple: empower youth with access to income, markets, and professional growth without the barriers often associated with formal employment. (Fmyd)

The platform is part of the larger NiYA Academy ecosystem, which also includes training, mentorship, and capacity-building programs designed to equip young Nigerians with relevant digital and entrepreneurial skills. (Fmyd)

Youth at the Centre of National Development

During the launch event, President Tinubu reiterated that youth empowerment is central to the nation’s progress, and that innovation, creativity, and resilience are critical for Nigeria’s future. He emphasised that the gig economy offers a platform for young people to contribute meaningfully to economic growth and compete on a global scale. (State House)

The President also encouraged young Nigerians to embrace digital opportunities and pursue their ambitions fearlessly, reaffirming the government’s commitment to creating an environment where youth can thrive economically and professionally. (PM News Nigeria)

Supporting Youth Entrepreneurship

As part of the launch, the Federal Government also awarded grants to empower young entrepreneurs across the country. 200 youth-led startups received ₦1 million each, while 100 individuals from the informal sector were awarded ₦500,000 each to support their businesses. These grants are intended as seed funding to help beneficiaries scale their ideas and enhance economic participation. (MSME Africa)

Why NiYA Gigs Matters

NiYA Gigs is more than a freelancing platform — it represents a shift in how young Nigerians access work and income. By dismantling traditional employment barriers and creating a marketplace where skills are valued first, the platform enables young people to:

  • Earn money using their skills without geographic limits,
  • Build portfolios and client relationships,
  • Gain visibility in local and global markets, and
  • Achieve financial independence and professional growth. (Fmyd)
